The tattooed homeless man He was scary. He sat on the grass with his cardboard sign, his dog (actually his dog was adorable) and tattoos running up and down both arms and even on his neck. His sign proclaimed him to be stuck and hungry and to please help.Im a sucker for anyone needing help. My husband both loves and hates this quality in me. It often makes him nervous, and I knew if he saw me right now, hed be nervous. But he wasnt with me right now.I pulled the van over and in my rear-view mirror, contemplated this man, tattoos and all. He was youngish, maybe forty. He wore one of those bandannas tied over his head, biker/pirate style. Anyone could see he was dirty and had a scraggly beard. But if you looked closer, you could see that he had neatly tucked in the black T-shirt, and his things were in a small, tidy bundle. Nobody was stopping for him. I could see the other drivers take one look and immediately focus on something else anything else. It was so hot out. I could see in the mans very blue eyes ho w dejected and tired and worn-out he felt. The sweat was trickling down his face. As I sat with the air-conditioning blowing, the scripture suddenly popped into my head. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, so ye have done it unto me.I reached down into my purse and extracted a ten-dollar bill. My twelve-year old son, Nick knew right away what I was doing. Can I take it to him, Mom?Be careful, honey. I warned and handed him the money. I watched in the mirror as he rushed over to the man, and with a shy smile, handed it to him. I saw the man, startled, stand up and take the money, putting it into his back pocket. Good, I thought to myself, now he will at least have a hot meal tonight. I felt satisfied, proud of myself. I had made a sacrifice and now I could go on with my errands.When Nick got back into the car, he looked at me with sad, pleading eyes. Mom, his dog looks so hot and the man is really nice. I knew I had to do more.Go back and tell him to stay there, that we will be back in fifteen minutes, I told Nick. He bounded out of the car and ran to tell the tattooed stranger. I could see the man was surprised, but nodded his agreement. From my car, my heart did a little flip-flop of excitement.We then ran to the nearest store and bought our gifts carefully. It cant be too heavy, I explained to the children. He has to be able to carry it around with him. We finally settled on our purchases. A bag of Ol Roy (I hoped it was good it looked good enough for me to eat! How do they make dog food look that way?); a flavored chew-toy shaped like a bone; a water dish, bacon flavored snacks (for the dog); two bottles of water (one for the dog, one for Mr. Tattoos); and some people snacks for the man.We rushed back to the spot where we had left him, and there he was, still waiting. And still nobody else was stopping for him. With hands shaking, I grabbed our bags and climbed out of the car, all four of my children following me, each carrying gifts. As we walked up to him, I had a fleeting moment of fear, hoping he wasnt a serial killer.I looked into his eyes and saw something that startled me and made me ashamed of my judgment. I saw tears. He was fighting like a little boy to hold back his tears. How long had it been since someone showed this man kindness? I told him I hoped it wasnt too heavy for him to carry and showed him what we had brought. He stood there, like a child at Christmas, and I felt like my small contributions were so inadequate. When I took out the water dish, he snatched it out of my hands as if it were solid gold and told me he had had no way to give his dog water. He gingerly set it down, filled it with the bottled water we brought, and stood up to look directly into my eyes. His were so blue, so intense and my own filled with tears as he said Maam, I dont know what to say. He then put both hands on his bandanna-clad head and just started to cry. This man, this scary man, was so gentle, so sweet, so humble.I smiled through my tears and said Dont say anything. Then I noticed the tattoo on his neck. It said Mama tried.As we all piled into the van and drove away, he was on his knees, arms around his dog, kissing his nose and smiling. I waved cheerfully and then fully broke down in tears.I have so much. My worries seem so trivial and petty now. I have a home, a loving husband, four beautiful children. I have a bed. I wondered where he would sleep tonight.My step-daughter, Brandie turned to me and said in the sweetest little-girl voice, I feel so good.Although it seemed as if we had helped him, the man with the tattoos gave us a gift that I will never forget. For my opinion Amazon’s e-commerce business model is stronger than Wal-Mart’s e-commerce business model because E-commerce is Amazon’s core mission and environment. Amazon started with a store that was properly feature-rich for its time and has gone on to strengthen that foundation. Today, it probably defenses as the leader in terms of the richness of its e-Commerce features, product breadth, personalized recommendations and depth of content available across e-commerce sites. However, there is a need for Amazon to offer a simplified and trendier shopping experience as an alternative which many other sites now offer. I don’t think Wal-Mart will replace Amazon any time soon, if ever, but it gives them a good shot of increasing their overall Web penetration. Amazon’s value proposition until now has been a broad assortment. This enables Walmart to compete with other companies with big assortments. I would prefer to make my internet purchases at Wal-Mart because this company has a great experience and long term history. Passing Down Acquired Traits An acquired trait is defined as a characteristic or trait that produces a phenotype that is a result of environmental influence. Acquired traits are not coded in the DNA of an individual and therefore most scientists believe they cannot be passed down to offspring during reproduction. In order for a characteristic or trait to be passed down to the next generation, it must be part of the individuals genotype. That is, its in their DNA. Darwin, Lamarck and Acquired Traits Jean-Baptiste Lamarck incorrectly hypothesized that acquired traits could indeed be passed down from parent to offspring and therefore make the offspring more suited to their environment or stronger in some way. ​ Charles Darwin originally adopted this idea in his first publication of his Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection, but later took this out once there was more evidence to show acquired traits were not passed down from generation to generation. Examples of Acquired Traits An example of an acquired trait would be an offspring born to a bodybuilder that had extremely large muscles. Lamarck thought that the offspring would automatically be born with larger muscles like the parent. However, since the larger muscles were an acquired trait through years of training and environmental influences, the large muscles were not passed down to the offspring. Genetic Traits Genetics, the study of genes, explains how traits like eye color and some genetic conditions can be passed on from one generation to the next. Parents pass traits to their young through gene transmission.  Genes, which are located on  chromosomes  and consist of  DNA, contain specific instructions for  protein  synthesis. Some conditions, like hemophilia, are contained in a chromosome and are passed on to offspring. But thats not to say all illnesses will be passed down; for instance, if you develop cavities in your teeth, thats not a condition youd pass down to your kids. Women who gave birth during this period had babies who were more susceptible to metabolic disorders such as obesity. Those childrens children were likely to suffer from these conditions as well, research showed. So while the bulk of the evidence suggests that acquired traits like muscles and obesity arent genetic, and cant be passed on to offspring, there are some cases where this principle has been disproven.

Humorous Wedding Speech by an Old Roomate (Flatmate) Well, congratulations to Herman and Connie. I assume that you are now expecting me to have a bit of fun at Herman's expense. Well, the only trouble is, Herman's expenses have been so high today that I’m not sure how much more he can take. Herman and I have been great friends (mates) for a long time now, and inevitably we've shared many things over the years: football; college; my driving license when Herman didn't have one - and now, a wedding table. Who'd have thought it? We also shared an apartment (a flat) for a short time. Not long after finding a place together I realised his biggest hate in life – housework! And why? Because you have to make the beds and do the dishes. Then six months later you have to start all over again. But we had a good understanding and split everything down the middle. It was my job to get the take-out, Herman’s job to get the beer, my job to clean the bath room, Herman’s job to clean the kitchen. And I’m not joking, when Herman was done with the kitchen you could eat of that floor †¦ there was lots of food still down there. On the whole, though, living with Herman was a pleasurable experience. Having said that, there weren’t any books in our flat, so when the Satellite dish stopped working we actually had to talk to each other. Now, I'd like to think I taught Herman a thing or two before he got a place of his own, especially about women. Imagine the shock I got when out of the blue he called me to say that he had got engaged, the things that go through a best friend’s mind. Mostly about mail order brides, one-way tickets from Thailand and subscriptions to Gay Connections Monthly. Then when I heard that it was Connie, I was filled with much relief and happiness. Because when it came to finding a wife, Herman couldn't have been luckier. Connie is a fantastic person and, as I'm sure you will all agree, looks stunning today. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for her. And, being a nurse, she has the added bonus of already being familiar with dealing with incontinence and impotence on a daily basis. Since Herman met Connie, I have seen a change in him.

Is Odysseus a superman Essay

Odysseus; the strong and brave god-like warrior in the Trojan War, who also possesses characteristics such as compassion, loyalty and talent as an orator, which makes him such a influential character within Homer’s novel: The Odyssey. The book, depicting the Adventures of Odysseus’s misfortune, and the journey through which he must get home to reclaim his life, land and his dear wife, portrays Odysseus as the central character with the unmatchable strength and abilities. But do Odysseus’s remarkable qualities classify him as a Superman, and by what means do we exactly class as a Superman? In my mind, a characteristic of Superhuman qualities is one which is that or beyond a normal humans. Therefore, we may classify Odysseus’s characteristics as either of superhuman quality, or that like of a normal human beings. Odysseus’s physical strength is one of his most remarkable and powerful qualities, which we come to learn of. It is because of this great strength, which allows him to throw the biggest discuss as the Phaeacian Games, hurtling it through the air where it landed far beyond the others. Book VIII ‘The Phaeacian Games’ ‘With this he leapt to his feet and, not even troubling to remove his cloak, picked up the biggest disk of all, a huge weight, more massive by far that those used in their regular matches. With one swing he launched it from his mighty hand, and the stone hummed on its course. Therefore, we may conclude that this quality is that in the nature of a ‘Superman’s’ as it is far greater than would normally be so. Odysseus also possessed other qualities, which were demonstrated within the novel. Apart from being the strong and powerful character, which he certainly was, he also had a softer, more timid side. Take for example the chapter in which Odysseus must talk with the ghosts of the dead in Hades. Here, Odysseus experiences panic and fright with what he must endure, as the underworld is that of a dismal and gloomy place. Book XI ‘The Book Of The Dead’ ‘From this multitude of souls, as they flustered to and fro by the trench, there came a moaning that was horrible to hear. Panic drained the blood from my cheeks. ‘ This panic and fright is certainly not of superhuman qualities, as they are stereotyped to be brave and valiant in all situations, which they might have to endure. Odysseus also experiences feelings of compassion and desire during his ventures: Book XI ‘The Book Of The Dead’ ‘Next came the souls of my dead mother, Anticleia, the daughter of the great Autoclycu, who had still been alive when Isaid farewell and sailed for sacred Ilium. My eyes filled with tears when I saw her there, and I was stirred to compassion. ‘ ‘As my mother spoke, there came to me out of the confusion in my heart the one desire†¦ Thrice, in my eagerness to clasp her to me, I started forward with my hands outstretched. Thrice, like a shadow or a dream, she slipped through my arms and left me harrowed by an even sharper pain. ‘ As I have already mentioned, I have defined a quality that is not of superhuman nature, to be one, which is just as any normal human beings. It goes unsaid saying that normal human beings experience emotions of desire and compassion, and also that of panic and fear, from which we can infer that Odysseus also has qualities which are not like that of a Superman. From these observations and presumptions of the novel ‘The Odyssey’, I have found that Odysseus, the brave warrior who fought at Troy, and endured the callous ventures of his misfortunate voyage home, may be one of a diverse character. There is the side of him, which is the superiorly strong and brave fighter; capable of facing and conquering some of the most horrific and atrocious situations one must endure. This may be classified as a quality like that of a superhuman, one of which is that or greater than a normal humans. Then there is the softer and more emotional side, to which Odysseus demonstrates his feeling of compassion and desire, which may be noted as characteristics which are not like that of a superhuman, which I have established as like that of a normal human beings. From this we can conclude, that Odysseus, not only had qualities like that of a superman, but also possessed emotions and desires like that of a normal person.

In 2009, I decided I wanted to be on birth control, even though I did not fully know my body or complete family history. Soon after, I suffered from a Pulmonary Embolism, a blood clot in my lung. The shortness of breath and severe agonizing chest pains were almost too horrible to bare. My life almost came to a screeching halt. It was then I found out my family suffered from a genetic disorder and my mother realized we needed more open communication. Having open communication with in the family positively influenced our family structure, in ways I could never have imagined. Now I felt safe and secure in asking my mother everything; sex, love, school, whatever it be. Parent and child relationships are a key factor in an adolescences’ social development and journey towards autonomy. Our textbook, Exploring Lifespan development (Berk, 2010), states that â€Å"teenagers still need guidance and protection from dangerous situations.
